Lotteries are now commonly used as commercial promotions. They are also used to select jury members from registered voters. Some lotteries allow people to create their own pools of tickets and participate in a group effort. This boosts the chances of a person winning.
The first known state-sponsored lottery in Europe took place in Flanders and Burgundy in the first half of the 15th century. King Francis I of France approved the creation of the Loterie Royale in 1539. The lottery was a fiasco. After World War II, the Loterie Nationale was reopened.
